St.Mary's Church,Chennai

The St.Mary's Church is located at Fort St.George and has its own tourism importance. It is one of the oldest churches in Asia and was built in the year 1680. It is the oldest British building in India and popularly called as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East'. The church occupies 5400 square feet area with curved roof. Wood was minimally used in the original design to avert fires.

Approximately, four feet width bombproof roof and 4 feet thick walls are its unique features. Due to its peculiar roof structure,the church was used as barrack and granary during War times. The church structure has undergone many modifications over the time. St.Mary's Church is located within the city and is one of the major travel attraction places of Chennai.
