St.Thomas Mount,Chennai

Name of the Location : St.Thomas Mount or parangimalai.It is a small hillock located in Chennai.

St.Thomas Mount is located near Guindy and Close to Chennai Airport.As per popular belief,St Thomas reached South India in AD 52 to preach Christianity. His enemies assassinated the apostle here. A shrine for Mother Mary was built here during the year 1523. The altar was built on the spot where St.Thomas died. A flight of 160 steps leads us to the shrine.

One can find a painting of the Madonna which is believed to have been painted by St.Luke. The Bleeding Cross with Sassanid Pahlavi inscriptions is said to have been chiseled by St.Thomas himself.
