Sri Kamakshi Amman Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple is in Maangaadu,a small village located at the outskirts of Chennai City. It is one of the temple & tourist attraction of chennai city.
Legend
Lord Shiva and Parvathi were playing in Kailash. In a playful mood, Goddess Parvathi closed the eyes of Lord shiva from behind. As a result, darkness surronded the whole universe and all the living beings suffered. Lord Shiva got angry and Goddess Parvathi craved for his pardon.Lord Shiva guided her to perform a severe penance on the earth.Goddess reached the earth and started penance in maangaadu by standing one legged between the Panchagni (Five types of Fire). Satisfied by her penance, Lord Shiva appeared before goddess and married her at Kanchipuram.
But Goddess Left the place without extinguishing the fire. Due to this whole place around maangaadu suffered from unbearable heat. On his course of yatra, Sri Aadhi Sankara visited Maangaadu, installed an Ardhameru Sri Chakra and extinguished the heat.
The Ardhameru Sri Chakram is the main deity in this temple. Ardhameru Sri Chakram is made of herbs and hence no abhishekam is performed for this. Only Kumkum Archana is performed by priests. Sri Chakram in Maangaadu temple belongs to the rare category in India.
